We’re slowly getting back online On the 16th April our hosting provider 123-reg made a catastrophic blunder deleting 100’s of customer virtual servers. They have since been unable to recover the servers and many reported permanent loss of data. This has left ourselves and many others having to manually reinstate server infrastructure and recover from file backups. As a very small operation that relies on community donations this resource intensive recovery operation hit us hard and taken time and money to recover.

Major hosting outage - 123reg Since early morning (GMT) April 16th 2016 our hosting provider 123reg has been experiencing a major outage. There was little communication on the matter and no information on the nature of the problem. It later transpired that as part of a catastrophic blunder 123-reg accidentally deleted 100’s of virtual servers. This serious incident is hitting many businesses hard and is being covered by various major UK news channels including BBC News online.

Sitemap generator updates We’ve been fixing and patching a couple of issues over the last few weeks, here is a quick round up of issues that we’ve looked at : Online Sitemap Generator When trying to spider certain secure websites a number of users experienced the error : “The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.” To resolve this issues we have added support for more HTTPS protocols including deprecated protocols.

Minor updates and fixes applied We’ve made some minor updates to our spider for the online and windows version of our sitemap generator. Binary files Binary files such as Word Document, Adobe PDF, etc. previously just showed the HTTP server response such as “Ok”. We now simply show the filename of such files. Domain names We have relaxed validation on domain names so it is not essential to use punycode. You can therefore decide which domain name you want to use for your sitemap.

Sitemap Ping Service Update Based on valuable user feedback, over the last week or so we’ve been making a number of improvements to the ping services as part of ongoing enhancements to the service. Some users experienced problems with the ping form not being automatically populated after generating their sitemap. We’ve resolved this so that it now shows all the details about your website ready for pinging. The form will automatically include website name, RSS and XML Sitemap urls.
